Lighting Basics: How to Look Professional on Camera
Good light matters more than an expensive camera. Here’s how to set it up the right way.
01Why light beats camera
A $40 webcam in good lighting will look better than a $400 camera in bad lighting. Light is the difference between “just started” and “looks like a pro.” The good news: you don’t need expensive gear to get it right.
02The one-light rule
Place a single light in front of you, slightly above eye level and off to one side. This is your key light, and it’s 80% of the battle. Your face should be the brightest thing in the frame.
The most common mistake beginners make is sitting with a window behind them. Backlight makes you a silhouette. Turn your desk so the window is in front of you, or close the blinds.
03Budget options that work
A ring light or a desk lamp with daylight-balanced bulbs (around 5600K) will dramatically improve your image. You don’t need a $200 key light to look good.
When you’re ready to upgrade, an app-controlled LED panel light gives you adjustable brightness and color temperature — worth it once streaming is a regular habit.
04Set it and forget it
Light your face, not your background. Set your camera’s white balance once under your lighting, then leave it. Consistency looks more professional than chasing perfect settings every stream.
